Capoeira Social Project

Celebrating 15 Years

Capoeira Social Project (CSP) is thrilled to announce its milestone celebration of 15 years of spreading the joy of capoeira and cultural arts education. Starting next week, this special event will culminate with a captivating weekend celebration from November 17th to 19th, featuring an array of activities, classes, and workshops.

Throughout the entire month of November, CSP is offering a diverse range of classes and workshops, welcoming both newcomers and capoeira enthusiasts. Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn and engage with capoeiristas who have been an integral part of CSP’s educational journey.

The weekend celebration, scheduled from November 17th to 19th, promises a spectacular showcase of capoeira, sambas, cocos, maculele, and percussion. It’s an event not to be missed, with the vibrant and rhythmic world of Brazilian cultural arts taking center stage.

The celebration will not only serve as a testament to CSP’s remarkable 15-year journey but also as an opportunity for the community to come together, learn, and celebrate the rich heritage of capoeira and Brazilian cultural traditions.

Contra-Mestre Coqui
Contra-Mestre Coqui

Contra Mestre Coqui (Carlos Crispin-Rodriguez) was born in Puerto Rico, later settling in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He joined Capuraginga in the mid-90s, under Mestre Loka, achieving his goal as the region’s first capoeira instructor.

Meeting Mestre Virgulino at a batizado event introduced him to Cordão De Ouro capoeira, which blended elements of Capoeira Angola and Regional, captivating him. Coqui left Capuraginga and joined Cordão De Ouro, eventually earning the rank of Contra Mestre. Despite no longer being part of the group, he continues to teach workshops and practice Cordão De Ouro Capoeira.

With over 25 years of experience, he balances capoeira with a career in law enforcement, family life, and the guidance of Mestres like Xuxo, Neghino (CDO), Muriel (CDO), and Chuvisco (Mandingueiros). His dream is for the next generation to embrace capoeira not just as it was, but for what it can be—a path to self-care, understanding, love, and respect. He hopes people will learn and appreciate capoeira for its movement and transformative potential, regardless of group affiliations, race, creed, or religion, using it to strengthen their communities and themselves.
